It’s not all about surfing. Here are 5 other things to do in La Union, Philippines.

La Union, Philippines is famous for it's surfing beaches. It's about a 5 hour bus ride from the capital city, and around four hours or less if you drive. People flock here because of the beach, the surfing camps, the awesome and cheap food, and also because of the amazing hostels. But what if you aren't the surfer type but still want to tag along your surfer friends? Or what if you're just eternally curious as to what other things can be done in this northern part of the Philippines? Then read on and explore.

1. Learn.

Just because you don't know how to surf it doesn't mean you cannot. Here in this part of the country, surfing lessons are like Starbucks coffee shops - there's one in every corner. In La Union, there's more than one instructor in every beach resort. And how many beach resorts are there? Well, let's say at least ten. And possibly more since the last time I've been there. If you're staying in one of the hotels or hostels by the beach, they're definitely offering an hour's lesson, plus free use of the board.

5. Sleep in a hammock and gain a friend

I know the first thing that you'd probably think of is, "Is sleeping in a hammock comfortable?" It sure is. There are hostels along the beach of San Juan in La Union that offer hammocks as your sleeping quarter. Its less than ten dollars a night, but make sure you are wearing thick clothing because the sea breeze can be cold at night.

The Circle Hostel might be the only one offering this kind of sleeping quarters, but they aren't the only hostel along the beach where you can just mingle and gain friends. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam and try to drop by the area - they have an RV as a sleeping quarter. How cool are these places?

Conclusion

Sometimes, people brand areas and they get to be solely known for that. While it's true that this place is a haven for surfers, it doesn't mean that just because you're not a surfer, you cannot enjoy what other things the place has to offer.
